Literacy Professional Development

EBEC offers training and professional development through a variety of formats: workshops, facilitated site-based meetings, leadership teams, and/or on-site mentoring.

We plan collaboratively with schools and districts to design professional development that addresses their needs as they begin to implement initiatives such as:

-       English Language Arts Common Core State Standards and Literacy in History/ Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects

-       Rhode Island Evaluation Model

-       RTI (Response to Intervention)

-       PLPs (Personal Literacy Plans)

-       Differentiated instruction

-       Effective co-teaching models for K-12 classrooms

We provide on-site job-embedded professional development. Some examples include:

-       Developing lab classrooms with a focus on differentiating instruction. This includes classroom observation, feedback, and planning for instruction.

-       Working with grade level teams to implement common assessments in ELA and the content areas, analyze their data, and use this analysis to plan for instruction that meets the needs of diverse learners.

Our professional development offerings focus on:

-       Implementing the ELA Common Core State Standards

o   Deepen the understanding of the ELA Common Core State Standards and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects

o   Align curriculum, instruction and assessment

o   Supporting ELA teachers and content area teachers as they integrate the ELA Common Core State Standards into their daily lessons

o   Working with schools and districts to develop curriculum, units of study and lessons

o   Literacy in the content areas

-       Building content knowledge to support the implementation of ELA Common Core State Standards and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and the Technical Subjects, such as:

o   Reading and responding to literary and informational text K-12

o   Writing arguments

o   Short term research projects

-       Facilitation of instructional/leadership teams to accomplish such tasks as:

o   Alignment of curriculum, assessment, and instruction

o   Analysis of assessment data

o   Development of SMART goals and the implementation of an action plan

o   Identification and implementation of appropriate intervention structures and strategies to meet the needs of at-risk students

o   Monitoring the effectiveness of the intervention plan

-       Implement strategies to develop adolescent literacy:

o   Differentiated instruction

o   Utilizing discipline-specific literacy skills

o   Developing academic vocabulary

o   Supporting engagement and motivation

-       Implement reading and writing strategies across disciplines and genres K-12
